Semax Overview

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10) with the addition of a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro sequence. It is studied in laboratory and preclinical models for its influence on neuronal signaling, CNS pathway dynamics, and molecular stress responses. Research has investigated its ability to modulate neurotrophic factor expression, neurotransmitter systems, and oxidative stress pathways.

History

Semax was developed in the 1980s by researchers at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow, working from the adrenocorticotropic hormone fragment ACTH(4-7). Extending that fragment with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro sequence produced a heptapeptide substantially more resistant to enzymatic degradation than the parent fragment, which had limited stability in laboratory conditions. The resulting compound has since been studied in preclinical models of neuronal signalling and stress response. It is used in research contexts investigating peptide effects on the central nervous system.
